About Wise Guide
Wise Guide is a straightforward, honest resource for people in the second half of life — and for the family members who support them. There are no sponsored posts, no affiliate schemes, and no corporate agenda behind it. It is run by one person, as a hobby, because the information is genuinely needed and much of what exists online is either patronising, overly commercial, or written by people who have no personal experience of the subject.
Who is behind it?
I spent most of my working life in local government — across social services and environmental services — before taking early retirement and running my own small business for a number of years. I am now well into retirement myself.
That career background matters, I think. Working in social services means I have spent a long time thinking about what older adults actually need, what good support looks like, and where the system lets people down. It is not an abstract subject for me — and it is no longer an abstract subject for me personally either, given where I am in life.
I started Wise Guide because I kept noticing the same problem: good, plain-English information for people over 55 is surprisingly hard to find. Most of what comes up in a search is either buried in jargon, written for professionals rather than individuals, or exists mainly to sell you something. This site is an attempt to do something more useful than that.
What can you expect from this site?
- Plain English. No jargon, no condescension, no assumptions about what you already know.
- Honest recommendations. If something is not worth your money or time, I will say so.
- UK focus. NHS, UK benefits, UK services — not American advice repackaged for a British audience.
- No agenda. This is a hobby, not a business. I have no products to sell and no sponsors to keep happy.
Who is Wise Guide for?
Primarily for people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond who want practical, reliable information — on health, money, technology, housing, care, travel, or just making the most of this stage of life. Also for adult children who are helping ageing parents navigate an increasingly complicated world.
If something on this site is wrong, out of date, or could be explained more clearly, I would genuinely like to know. There is a contact link below.
Wise Guide is written in good faith by a retired individual with a background in public service. It is not a substitute for professional advice on medical, legal, or financial matters — always consult a qualified professional for decisions that matter.
